The Canterbury Earthquake

On the 4th September 2010 at 04:36am a 7.1 magnitude earthquake rocked the Canterbury region of New Zealand causing wide-spread damage to buildings and infrastructure and closing central Christchurch.
We have since received many messages of support from concerned clients and friends around the world.
Please rest assured that all of us are safe and CCT has come through the worst of the crisis relatively unscathed. Our own thoughts go out to the many residents and businesses that lost their properties and personal affects during the quake.
As we and the community at large begin picking up the pieces from such a traumatic event, it is touching to know that we are in the thoughts of friends and colleagues.
We wish thank all of you who have sent us messages of sympathy and encouragement in recent days.

Below are some first-hand accounts of the quake by our staff and consultants:

My first reaction on being awoken was a train was rumbling past the house, then realised no tracks near Oxford!!, didn't move as it dawned on me what was happening. I knew there was nothing to fall on me so stayed put in bed. It seemed to go on for a long time but of course it didn't. I was on my own so I text my husband who was in Hong Kong at the time and got up to find house still in one piece just pictures off the shelves and I glass broken. That was and still is the extent of the damage. Oxford was very lucky as we are built on bedrock and just the access bridges and roads suspect so we were told to stay put. The epi centre was not far from us at Darfield so we were extremely lucky.

I had experienced earthquakes prior to this in Taipei(Taiwan) but not on this scale!!
- Marie Jones (CCT InfoTech NZ Ltd)
It took a few seconds for me to wake-up and realise what was actually happening when the earthquake hit and by this point the room had begun shaking.
I immediately rolled off my bed (grabbing my mobile phone as I did) and rolled under the bed just as the shaking started to get quite violent.
From under the bed I could see the pictures being hurtled from the walls and my snowboard falling over with the shaking. Bits of dust cascaded down from the ceiling as plasterwork gave way and then the street lighting outside started to flicker out as the shaking continued.
After an intense half a minute the noise finally subsided and all motion stopped and all that was left was darkness and the sound of car alarms in the street.
It was instantly apparent to me that this was a major event and the situation could be dire. I looked at my phone and was amazed to see it still had signal but that wasn't what I was looking for at that point; my phone has a built in torch which I turned on and proceeded to get dressed quickly and get out of the building before the next aftershock hit.
Damage to the house I lived in was quite substantial as it was a 103-year old manor house. All 3 of its chimney's collapsed through the roof, one of which only narrowly missing hitting one of my flatmates as she slept in her bed.
